Alison and Paul’s Wedding Photography at Lochside Hotel, New Cumnock

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Alison and Paul first met briefly, 10 years ago.  Alison was out on a girlie day with her sister and friends and saw Paul with his friends in a local pub.  She asked her sister if she knew him and was told Paul was too young for her!  About 4 years later on New Year’s Day 2003, Alison was out with her girlfriend Kimberley and got talking to Paul!  They hit it off and went on their first date a couple of weeks later.  From then on, they were inseparable, until, 6 months later, Paul graduated from University and got his first Quantity Surveying job on the Isle of Man.  They then pursued a long distance romance for the next year and a half!  When Paul finally came home to a job in Glasgow, they made plans and bought their first house together that same year, 2005.

Paul proposed to Alison in Barcelona on 6th of August 2006.  It was a total surprise for Alison and she thought initially he was joking.  They had been on some amazing holidays to Singapore, Las Vegas, Paris and Rome, and each time they went on holiday, all the family would be thinking Paul was going to propose.  When Alison booked a quiet weekend in Barcelona no-one expected anything exciting to happen.  Paul caught everyone out.  They had been for a lovely dinner in an idyllic square overlooking a stunning fountain.  As they walked around the square after their meal, Paul stopped and produced a beautiful ring and Alison was stuck for words.   Of course she said ‘yes’.

Paul and Alison wanted their wedding venue to be fairly local and easy for their guests to travel to, so they looked at about five venues in Ayrshire and finally opted for Lochside House Hotel near New Cumnock. The staff were very accommodating and the venue itself stunning.  The hotel has two beautiful suites, one which the couple had their wedding breakfast in and the other to host the evening reception.  Alison said “the personal service offered by the hotel made our day so relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable”

Wedding_Photography_Lochside_Hotel_4

Alison got her dress from By Storm in Bearsden, Glasgow.  The designer Joyce Young has fabulous collections which are all made to measure.  It was Alison’s mum who suggested looking there as they also do Mother of the Bride outfits (she had hers made there for Alison’s sister’s wedding 6 years before).  Alison also got her veil and tiara from By Storm.  Shoes were bought from the Westend Wedding Boutique.  They had a great range in stock and also offered a shoe dying service to match a shoe to a dress for the bridesmaids.
Alison and Paul’s flowers were from Allison’s Flowers in Stonehouse.  The owner Allison Walker dealt with Alison directly and offered a lot of helpful advice on what flowers were available at that time of year.  She discussed design, style, shape and even added diamantes and sparkle to the flowers.   All bridesmaid bouquets and buttonholes were supplied by Allison’s Flowers

Wedding_Photography_Lochside_Hotel_5

Paul and Alison met Mark and Donna of Archibald Photography at the SECC Wedding Fair and as Alsion said “immediately felt that this was the kind of photography they were looking for.  We were looking for more of a storybook idea which captures the mood of our day rather than very formal pictures.  Mark and Donna spent a lot of time showing us the different layouts available and how they work on the actual wedding day.  It was important to us that we were not taken away from our wedding guests for too long and on the day Mark was really good at taking great pictures quickly and without obtrusion.  We were really impressed and satisfied with the service both in the run up to the wedding and afterwards.”

Other notable suppliers for Alison and Paul included their wedding video by Hart Video, Cars were from NIL WEdding Cars , their band was the James Honey Band – a 9 piece band with a great repertoire.  (Contact Gordon Pollock gordon_pollock@hotmail.com) and Alison got her flowergirl’s wand and little teddy with Swarovski crystals from Louise Graham at  www.weddingandbaby.co.uk

Wedding_Photography_Lochside_Hotel_10

The best thing about the day for Alison and Paul was the smooth running of it.  From the moment Alison entered the church the day just flowed seamlessly.  Also, having a winter wedding they were not sure what kind of day it would be weather wise.  It turned out to be a beautiful sunny and frosty day.  In addition, the wedding ceremony was very personal to them both as Alison, who is a music teacher had her colleagues there to play the organ and trumpet and her school choir sang a blessing after the vows. Paul also had a Priest friend of the family give a blessing too.  Friends of them or their family had made the stationary, the cake, the video and Alison knew the band personally.  It really added to the intimacy of the whole day.

Wedding_Photography_Lochside_Hotel_7

The funniest moment for the couple was during the cutting of the cake, as everyone was quiet, when their little nephew shouted out at the top of his voice that he needed the toilet.  It was all caught on the wedding video.

Karen & Michael’s Wedding at Rufflets Hotel, St Andrews

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Michael and Karen met in 2002 in Connecticut, USA.  They both took part in a Work America programme with Karen travelling from Aberdeen University and Michael from Edinburgh University.  There were 25 students from the UK living in a college and working on a theme park.  Everyone got to know each other really well and romance blossomed between the couple from the start.  They spent 10 weeks together and then went travelling separately for a month but kept in touch.  Once Karen & Michael were both back in Scotland, they met up and decided to stay together and travel between their universities.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_1

Karen was in her final year and once she graduated, she decided to move to Edinburgh and join the police.  After 6 years Michael proposed.  Whilst on a walk in Peebles on a lovely summers day, Karen threw some money in a wishing well.  Her wish was that Michael would propose sometime soon.  Michael asked what Karen had wished for - she didn’t tell him but could see he was smiling.  About 15 minutes later, whilst walking along the River Tweed,  Michael got down on one knee and proposed.  Karen doesn’t even remember saying ‘yes’ as she was crying so much!

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_2

A week after this, Michael had to go offshore for 6 weeks.  Karen now knows he was quite happy about this because she went into planning overdrive.  Karen’s parents were very helpful and they viewed lots of venues.  But as soon as Karen saw Rufflets Country House on the outskirts of St Andrews, she knew that was their wedding venue.  Rufflets had an intimate feel as it was a small family run hotel but the only drawback was that they were in the process of building an extension for bigger weddings.  Karen sat down with their wedding co ordinator and she showed her all the plans.  Karen felt confident that the extension would complement the original hotel because the staff were so professional and had such high standards.  Luckily, Michael loved the hotel as much as Karen and they booked it when he returned.  The couples were both over the moon with the completed extension.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_3

Karen really enjoyed planning the wedding.  She tried on about 20 dresses but fell in love with one by Essence in Eleganza Sposa in Edinburgh.  It was lace and organza and the layers were a mix of white and champagne.  She also bought a mid length veil from Eleganza and shoes from Rainbow.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_4

Karen met with a florist, Yvonne from Pod Flowers in Newport.  The couple had decided that the colour theme was going to be apple green as it was lovely and fresh and Yvonne came up with lots of ideas.  There were vases filled with apples, green and cream flowers in the reception room and lots of green roses.  This complemented the apple green ribbons tied to the chair covers.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_5

Michael and Karen both wanted a photographer who was not too overbearing and who made them feel relaxed on the day.  Neither of them love posing for photos and Mark’s style suited them.  Most of their guests commented on how laid back Mark of Archibald Photography was and that he captured the mood of the day.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_6

The couple were hoping that if the weather was good enough, they would have the wedding ceremony in the lovely gardens at Rufflets.  Unfortunately, when they woke up on the our wedding, it was very foggy and rainy.  Karen and Michael realised that the wedding would have to be held indoors.  On the same day as their wedding was the RAF show at Leuchars and the couple had warned everyone about heavy traffic.  Karen left really early to go to the hairdressers anticipating this but it seems most people opted to stay away and most of the planes were grounded.  As Karen said “This was a blessing in disguise because they had made so much noise the day before”.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_7

Even though the ceremony was indoors, it was still the highlight of Karen & Michael’s day. It was held in the glass reception room in the Garden Suite.  As Karen walked in, she became very emotional and when she first saw Michael, he had tears in his eyes.  Karen’s two bridesmaids and the couple’s three year old neice, Niamh, walked up the aisle before her. As Karen told us “up to this point, Niamh had been very well behaved but once at the top of the aisle, she would not stop chattering.  Her dad tried to remove her and she started screaming!  Although some people thought this caused a scene, we were both quite glad because it broke the tension and we both gathered our emotions and were able to talk through our vows”.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_8

Two of the couple’s close friends gave readings and the registrar made the ceremony very personal for them.  The couple were both really nervous and even though Karen had had some practice walking in her dress, as soon as she got to the ceremony she kept on catching her dress on her shoes.  Karen said “after the ceremony as we walked back down the aisle, I had to hand my bouquet to Michael as I had to pick up the dress as I thought I was going to trip up.  It was his first task as a husband and he did very well, even though people wondered why he was holding the flowers”.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_9

Luckily, by the time the ceremony was finished the rain had stopped and Karen and Michael got their photos taken outside and were able to enjoy the gardens.  The rest of the day flew in for them and after a lovely meal, their band Moondance arrived.  The rest of the night was filled with dancing and chatting.

Wedding_Photography_Rufflets_Hotel_10

Karen’s advice to brides would be “do not stress if you don’t get to chat properly with all your guests, they all understand.  You still want to enjoy youreslf and fit in a few dances with your new husband, as the night will be over before you know it”.

We’ve been interviewed by Wedding Organiser website

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Happy to see our recent interview with the Weddings Organiser website has appeared so quickly.  You can view the full interview at http://www.weddingsorganiser.co.uk/interviews/

Here’s what they asked us and what we said:

To start, please can you tell us a little bit about your business?
Archibald Photography Ltd are a family business with a complete passion for what we do; our services are requested from across the UK and overseas.  Mark combines his enthusiasm for photography with his ability to produce natural but contemporary images; he specialises in storytelling photography which reflects true personalities.  While I am an experienced album designer and I ensure the business provides the best customer service to clients.
When was it founded and who are the principals?
The business was founded in 2003 and since then we have photographed hundreds of weddings and portraits across the UK and abroad.  The Directors are Mark Archibald and myself, Donna Marshall.  Mark has many photographic qualifications to his name and last year became the 2008 Fujifilm Licentiate Photographer at the British Photography Awards.  2008 also saw the company being nominated for a VOWS Award for our exceptional customer service.

How many employees do you have and where are you based?
Besides ourselves, we employ a part-time administrator and operate our business from our residential studio in Crawford, South Lanarkshire.  This base is great for us as we are easily accessible from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire.

How would you describe your business in a few words?
Archibald Photography Ltd puts the emphasis on providing the highest quality of customer service, album and, of course, photography.  Mark lets people be themselves, enjoy the party with their friends and family and doesn’t ask people to do things that will make them feel awkward. For much of a wedding day, he will remain in the background capturing candid and spontaneous moments plus all the little details which make your day so special.

What makes you different from other wedding companies?
It is very important to Archibald Photography Ltd that in many years to come couples can look back at their images and remember what happened on the day without thinking they look uncomfortable. The people who book us don’t want endless pictures of people standing in straight lines looking like they are waiting for the ‘firing squad’ or for the photographs of the wedding party to take several hours – which suits Mark’s fast pace of working.

How do you define a good wedding supply company?
Someone who exceeds expectations is the best definition.  In our experience, your day will run smoothly if you book someone who can work quickly, unobtrusively, who will be nice (not bossy!) to your guests and can cope with the unexpected.  These are all qualities of an experienced professional.

We know we are a good wedding supply company because of the comments we get back from our clients.  Many of our clients become our firm friends.  We recently received this email from Lorna & Declan Daly:

“Mark Archibald stood out for his exceptional talent for his craft, his enthusiasm, his natural and personable style of working, and his ability to capture perfectly the most touching and special moments of our day. His outstanding photographs speak for themselves and he evidently gets great joy from his work. We were delighted with his professionalism combined with a totally personal approach: he made us feel fantastic on the day and as relaxed as it is possible to be at such a time! Many of our guests commented afterwards on what a brilliant photographer he was. Archibald Photography vastly exceeded all expectations. We love you, Mark and Donna! Thank you for our amazing photographs xxxx”

Who is your target market?
The target market for Archibald Photography Ltd is people who really appreciate good images.  We love photographing people who have enthusiasm for photography but who are not interested in cheesy images or hours and hours of over posed traditional shots.  We aim to book couples who are looking for a totally bespoke and personal service – the end result being an album that will be loved and passed down to future generations as the complete story of the special day.

Describe what you are doing to anticipate the next year of Internet growth?
The Archibald Photography website is a key marketing tool for our business.  We use our blog to keep clients and potential customers up-to-date with our work (www.archibaldphotography.co.uk/blog) .  The most popular item on our blog is our real life wedding stories and we use this to show images from recent weddings and highlight the wedding suppliers that our couples rate highly.  We also encourage our clients to follow us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Archibald-Photography/27263731797?ref=s#) and Twitter (ArchibaldPhotog).

Where will you be in 5 years?
In 5 years, we will still be offering a totally personal bespoke photography service because we love what we do.  We cover a smaller number of weddings than many other photographers to ensure we can provide a totally customised service.  We expect that our services will be requested from further and further afield over the years as our business exposure grows – last year we covered a fantastic wedding in Girona, Spain and we hope to be doing more destination weddings over the next few years.

Why should a couple choose you over someone else?
Archibald Photography Ltd provide beautiful, natural photography and the most stunning and elegant range of albums.  Each album can be as unique as the wedding day.  We work with clients to choose a colour scheme and page layout to suit their taste.  Our albums have a timeless feel, modern yet classic, and are the ultimate presentation of a wedding day.

Describe the customer services that you provide.
We invite couples to come to our studio to view some sample albums and have a chat with us about their plans and our approach.  Then before the wedding, we will meet with the couple to chat through timings and the organisation of their day.
While our clients relax on honeymoon, Mark performs several days of post production work to produce a complete set of beautifully finished images (no raw files straight from camera).  We offer total flexibility in our albums – each can be tailored in terms of album size and number of images.  The majority of our clients love their wedding photos so much that they have at least 100 prints in their album design.

Any other information you think may be useful.
We have many couples returning to us when they start a family to have their little ones photographed.  It is lovely to be asked to record the growth of a family and we think testament to our quality of service that people choose to come back to us again and again.

Interview with Beth Morgan Millinery

Monday, March 16th, 2009

The Featured Supplier this week on the Weddings Organiser website is Beth Morgan – for whom we had the priviledge of photographing an entire millinery collection at the end of last year.  Beth’s work is gorgeous, both for weddings and any other formal occasion you have planned!  She has recently launched a new website full of Mark’s photography work being modelled by the gorgeous Pamela (whose wedding Mark shot last year out in Girona, Spain).  You can see Beth’s new website at www.bethmorgan.co.uk or read her interview with Weddings Organiser at www.weddingsorganiser.co.uk/interview/19

Cheryl & Chris’s Wedding at Dundas Castle

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Chris and Cheryl originally met at a mutual friends’ birthday night out at the Cathouse in Glasgow 3 years ago. As Cheryl told us, “We instantly communicated in the loud rock club and later arranged a date. We already had a mutual taste in music covered so the rest was easy.” Chris and Cheryl were both very interested in getting married and four months later Chris proposed.

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_2

Chris proposed to Cheryl over looking the Rest and Be Thankful near Loch Lomond where Cheryl had told Chris for the first time that she loved him. It was very hard to hide a secret from Cheryl and when Chris had asked what her favourite restaurant was she knew something was up. It worked out well for both of them since Chris was having trouble choosing a ring and Cheryl then got to choose the perfect ring from Mr Harold and Son in Glasgow.

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_3

Cheryl informed us that “our chosen venue Dundas Castle was a bit of a happy accident. We had held off on looking for a venue but it was still on our minds. While out one day on one of our road trips, we found ourselves lost round the south Queensferry area and as we were trying to find our bearings we both noticed a castle through the trees and instantly felt drawn to it. One internet search later and a phone call and we found ourselves standing in one of the most fairytale looking rooms we had ever seen. It was just us down to a tee. We booked the venue the same day.” (www.dundascastle.com)

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_4

The wedding day itself ran smoothly and the rain stayed off for photographs outside. The couple were so glad they had the opportunity for photos outside with such an amazing venue and felt the photos turned out great. Once inside the rain began to pour but a few hours of dancing later, Cheryl & Chris decided to take the risk and go for a walk out in the rain to get some fresh air. Cheryl told us “on our walk outside alone in the quiet we could see a man approaching from the distance with a brolly for us. It was Bob who worked at the castle and by giving us the brolly we were able to survive the Scottish weather and enjoy some time together a little longer. Surprisingly the dress was not ruined on our walk”.

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_10

Cheryl’s dress was by UK designer Stephanie Allin (www.oneandonly.co.uk) and purchased from Eleganza Sposa in Glasgow (www.eleganza.co.uk) and her shoes were from The Accessory Boutique (www.theaccessoryboutique.com)

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_6

The flower arrangements were all created by Lilium Florist (www.lilium-florist.co.uk) and hair and make up was done by Alexis Miller (www.alexismake-up.com)

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_1

Cheryl instantly fell in love with Archibald Photography at the Wedding Ideas Fair at the George Hotel in Edinburgh. After a talk with Donna and a look through Mark’s work, Cheryl had found the down-to-earth creative photographer for the wedding and all she had to do was convince Chris. “We approached 3 highly skilled photographers in total and Archibald Photography was by far the best candidate. When it came to the big day we trusted Mark to just do what he wanted and lucky for us he stayed and took fantastic informal shots of our wedding day. We knew Mark was dedicated to getting creative shots of our day when we saw him walk away with dirt all down his back. He had been down on the floor outside taking photographs. We love the story the photos tell. No need for a videographer when this guy is around. Donna was also a star and always went out of her way to make sure we were happy. In the end we were very pleased with the service.”

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_7

During the 10 week run up to the wedding, Cheryl and Chris attended dance lessons with Learn to Wedding Dance in preparation for their first dance as husband and wife (www.learn2weddingdance.co.uk). “The whole experience was a laugh and Felicity made us feel very welcome in her studio. By the end of the 10 weeks we had learned a dance routine which not only entertained our guests but gave us something fun to do in the run up to the wedding away from the stress. On our honeymoon on Kuredu Island (www.kuredu.com) they played “Sway” by Dean Martin, and we were happy to be able to perform our routine beyond our wedding day.

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_9

When asked about the best bit of the day, Cheryl said “For me it has to be seeing Chris all dressed up waiting for me at the bottom of the isle with a great big smile as the main theme from star wars was playing.”  For Chris, “I think for me, seeing Cheryl for the first time in her wedding dress – my heart skipped a beat and I got butterflies in my stomach. I get the same feeling now just thinking about it.”

Wedding_Photographer_Dundas_Castle_5

The only thing that didn’t happen as planned for Cheryl and Chris was that their specially made amaretto wedding cake was not put out with the rest of the vanilla cake.  But the funniest thing was the evening ceilidh dancing with the majority of guests being English and never having participated in a ceilidh before.  There were arms and legs all over the place.

Ruth & Chris’s Wedding at Prestonfield House

Friday, March 13th, 2009

It’s not often that you ask a couple how they met to be told there’s a PC and non-PC version!  The PC version of how Ruth and Chris met is through a sports club (www.8thdayuk.com) that arranges more unusual activities like Street Luge, Sumo Suit Wrestling, Zorbing etc.  Ruth had told her parents that she was doing a dance class… the full and unedited version of the story is they met through a mixed-pole dancing class!  Yes, Chris was spinning around a pole too, and Ruth has photographic evidence to prove it!  This was back on 24th August 2005, then Chris promptly went home for a holiday to Australia… he managed to get Ruth’s email address from a mutual friend and they started chatting via email.  Chris asked Ruth out rock-climbing for their first date on 1st October 2005 and they got married 3 years and one day later on 2nd October 2008.

Chris proposed on the threshold of the house they couple had bought on the evening they picked up the keys.  Ruth had random decorating and renovating thoughts running through her head as she put the key in the door.  Chris said “before you go in…” and she turned around to find him down on one knee with a satin shoe (ring holder) with diamonds in it.  He said “I want to start our life in our new home together properly, will you marry me”.  Ruth completely choked, teared up and managed to nod her head – it is a rare occurrence for Ruth to be lost for words!

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_2

Ruth and Chris had planned a wedding in Australia, but with international flights and flying Ruth’s family across the country, along with renovating their house, they just couldn’t afford it.  So the couple started thinking about where else they could have the wedding.  Though they live in London, the couple felt it just lacked a sense of romance to get married in a Registry Office, and Vegas was just too cheesy!

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_9

Chris and Ruth both love Edinburgh, though they’d never been there together – they’d both wanted to live there before they met but as Ruth says “thankfully we both ended up in London or we might never had met!”  So, Edinburgh seemed the obvious choice once they had decided upon it.

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_8

The couple started hunting around for venues and once Ruth saw Prestonfield House (www.prestonfield.co.uk), she knew Chris would love it and it was the place for them.  Chris trusted her judgment completely, so hadn’t even looked at the website photos before they went in to sign the contract!  Thankfully he was blown away by it!

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_13

The day was absolutely brilliant for Chris and Ruth.  As Ruth said “Chris and his best man, David, relaxed with whisky and cigars in the summer house before the wedding, the Leather Room was a cosy venue for the ceremony, the grounds were exquisite for our photos, and dinner in the Stuart Room was sensational! We couldn’t have asked for more from our day.”

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_1

Ruth’s dress was made for her in Asia and tradition in her family dictates that the family aunts normally buy the headdress.  But as Ruth’s Aunty Irene had passed away a number of years ago, her Mum bought her tiara in her honour.  It was a pale, matt gold with pearls which matched the antique pearl necklace and earrings her Mum had given her on Ruth’s 21st birthday which her Mum in turn had received for her 21st birthday.  Chris & Ruth discovered an Art Deco pearl bracelet in an antique shop in Hay on their first camping trip together which Ruth also wore on the day.

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_5

Chris wore cufflinks of black and white pearls which Ruth designed for him with Lesley of Lesley’s Designs and both the groom, bestman & bridesmaid wore hats bought at Fabhatrix on Grassmarket (http://www.fabhatrix.com).

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_6

Chris and Ruth’s shoes were important accessories on the day (Ruth’s were copied for the cake topper) and these were also bought overseas.  The veil with amethysts was an eBay find!  Flowers were provided by Lilium (www.liliumflorist.co.uk)

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_14

When asked why they booked Archibald Photography, Ruth said “I absolutely loved Mark’s photos on the website.  I narrowed down a few photographers which we came to meet, but had told Chris that he was my favourite from the photos, so he was our first appointment in Scotland.  For me, the photos were one of the most important things as it’s what we’ll keep forever.  We met Mark and all hit it off from the first moment – it was more like hanging out with a (talented) friend than anything else.  We’d already made our mind up when we walked out, but had promised to meet the others, but nobody stood a chance!  It was easy to relax around Mark on the day, and he certainly went the extra mile getting into awkward positions just to get the right shot – we had a fantastic time and really enjoyed ourselves through the photo shoot.  I think the end results show that we all had a great time!”

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_4

The couple’s fantastic cake was made at Truly Scrumptious Cakes (http://www.truly-scrumptious-cakes.co.uk), who listened to their ideas and then used their expertise to create exactly what Ruth and Chris wanted.  They even created a replica of Ruth’s wedding shoe for the top of the cake from photos.  The couple had a fruit layer to keep, and a delicious chocolate layers to eat, and there was no marzipan in sight as they both hate it!

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_12

Ruth and Chris’s videographer, Geoff, is also worthy of mention as they thought he was a lot of fun to work with (www.watchthebirdie.co.uk)

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_3

Exchanging their vows and listening to the readings they’d chosen really meant the world to Ruth.  As did having such fun having their photos taken and sitting down to a sensational meal in a glorious setting with some of their favourite people (they are all “foodies”).

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_10

When asked if anything went wrong, Ruth said “nothing major, but the buttonholes were much bigger than I expected.  I was a bit shocked as I walked down the aisle and spotted them but thought to myself that if that was the worst thing of the day, then I was a lucky girl (and I was!).  The other thing would be the night ending – I hadn’t danced as much as I’d have liked!!  But as we’ll do it all again in Australia next year, we’ll be able to “right any wrongs!”.

Wedding_Photography_Prestonfield_House_11

Things that made the couple laugh?  Ruth said “just as Mark was about to take a photo of Chris & I with my bridesmaid Rowan, instead of ‘say cheese’, Chris said ‘say threesome’.  Ro & I looked a little shocked, then cracked up laughing, which shows in the photos!  Also, Chris is quite famous amongst our friends for falling asleep at almost every party.  We thought it would happen late in the night, and our guests were prepped with disposable cameras just incase Mark had already left… however Chris managed a quick kip before we’d even sat down for dinner!”

Gayle & Kahl’s wedding photography on Croy Shore and at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Gayle and Kahl met on the web on Sarah (Property Ladder) Beeny’s dating site (www.mysinglefriend.com) – Kahl was being hassled by his sister Kari to ‘just give it a go’ and Gayle’s friend Aileen talked her into going ‘on a few wee dates’. The couple got chatting online towards the end of September 2006, met a few weeks later and got married on 3rd May 2008.

wedding_photography_croy_shore_1

As far as Kahl was concerned, there was never going to be a more perfect place to propose than on Croy Shore, South Ayrshire. As the sun set, he presented the rock and rendered Gayle speechless.

wedding_photography_croy_shore_2

We asked Gayle and Kahl why they chose Croy Shore to get married, they said “the place means a lot to Gayle and her family as they spent a lot of time there as kids and still do today. We try and get down there most weekends during the summer. We rented the Segganwell Cottages that sit right on the beach from The National Trust for Scotland (www.ntsholidays.com).”

wedding_photography_croy_shore_3

Gayle and Kahl thought the weekend couldn’t have gone any smoother (with huge thanks to all of their friends and family for their massive help). There’s 125 steps from Culzean Castle down to the Segganwell Cottages and Gayle, Kahl and their guests knew every one of them very well by the Monday morning. They built three marquees plus lifted all of the tables, glasses, plates, crockery, linen, chairs etc down to the beach on the Friday and back up on the Monday morning. As Gayle said at the time “it was the best honeymoon bikini diet ever”

wedding_photography_croy_shore_4

Gayle’s dress, veil and accessories all came from Ann Sloane of Hamilton. (www.sloanesbridal.co.uk). Her sparkly shoes however were “a fantastic ebay find”. Flowers were provided by Mary’s Flowers in Ayr. (www.marysflowers.co.uk).

wedding_photography_croy_shore_5

The couple said that photography, food and music were their big 3 for their day. They wanted to eat well, dance like fools and have some stunning images to remind them of the day they ate well and danced like fools! We asked Gayle and Kahl why they chose Archibald Photography and they said “because of Mark…. simple as that. We met with quite a few photographers and we just clicked with Mark. Any photographer that asks what sort of music you fancy listening to before you kick off your first meeting was always going to grab Kahl’s attention”.

The couple had no horror stories of the day. They had a fairly small, informal wedding and planned everything themselves and it all just worked. As they said “who says you can’t have a wedding on a beach at the bottom of a cliff with a barbeque in Scotland in May? The sun shone and everything was perfect”.

The speeches are usually a time for laughs at a wedding and at Gayle and Kahl’s wedding, Gayle’s dad, who’s incredibly shy, bowed out of his ‘speechly duties’ and Gayle’s brother stepped in to say a few words. He’s a teacher and used to public speaking, so you’d think that the unconventional ‘brother of the bride’ speech would be a doddle…. not so. The emotion of the day got a little too much for him and he couldn’t speak for the tears. As he fought to get through his speech, he became more and more inaudible and his voice got higher…. ‘Only dogs can hear me now’, he said through his sobs… There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

According to Kahl and Gayle, saying ‘ I do’ was the biggest buzz!

Lorna & Declan’s Wedding at Comlongon Castle

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Lorna and Declan are both professional violinists; Lorna is from Ayrshire in Scotland and Declan from Monaghan, Ireland. They first met in September 2006 on tour in Cyprus with an orchestra. Declan saw an opportunity in an empty seat on the tour bus next to the lovely Scottish girl and they got chatting…. That night in the hotel bar while they were having a few whiskies, the fiddles were taken out and they enjoyed a wonderful night of tunes and songs. They recognised a ‘kindred spirit’ in each other and just over a year later they were engaged, then they were married the following May in 2008.

The way Declan proposed was very romantic – the couple were on a 3 week trip around India and Declan waited until the day they got to Agra, and had timed their arrival so that they arrived at the Moon Gardens across the river from the Taj Mahal just in time to see the sunset. He took Lorna’s hand, led her over towards the riverbank where he got down on one knee…

Lorna and Declan had a really amazing day with all their loved ones around them in a magical venue – the day really exceeded all their expectations of what they hoped for their day. They felt (www.comlongon.com) near Clarencefield, Dumfries & Galloway had everything: an ancient Castle Keep to be filled with candles and a huge fire in the fireplace for an intimate and atmospheric ceremony, then photographs in the beautiful grounds and a delicious banquet in a cosy wood-panelled dining room. The castle also has a resident ceilidh band who put on some fabulous dancing for all their guests after dinner giving the men a chance to show off their kilts!

Lorna’s dress came from the Spanish company Pronovias and she found it in the store in New Bond Street; it was only the second dress she tried on! Declan and Lorna’s florist was Kirsty at Kirstie’s Flowers in Troon, who provided the beautiful bouquets, buttonholes and corsages.

Lorna and Declan found Archibald Photography on the internet and said they were “struck straight away by Mark’s stunning images. His enthusiasm and energy along with his talent and skill as a photographer were captivating. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and the outcome!”

The couple felt everything about their day was amazing in its own way. The ceremony was very special – they were overwhelmed right from the point where the piper struck up to lead their guests over to the Great Hall, to the beautiful readings and music from their friends and family. They felt the minister gave just the right tone to the ceremony, incorporating ancient Celtic blessings into the service to reflect both the medieval Scottish surroundings and their Celtic roots.

Lorna & Declan we amazed that everything went to plan and there were no unpleasant surprises – they felt Comlongon Castle had everything under control! There were some rainy spells on the day but Lorna felt afterwards that the lack of sun was a blessing in disguise since she didn’t have to screw up her face for the photos!!

When asked what the funniest part of the day was, the couple said “our two kilted ushers leaping courageously (or just drunkenly?) around in the sword-dancing competition later in the evening. We had to award them the prize for the most ridiculous spectacle of the day!”

Mark’s memory of the day is how well he got on with Lorna and Declan and how good the music was throughout the day (but I suppose that should be expected from the marriage of two professional musicians!). We still cherish the lovely comment they emailed to us after the wedding:
