A landrover took us to the top of the hill overlooking the Groom’s family home. The wind was extreme. So much so that a few shots later Aika’s veil flew off her head only to be retrieved by a stealthy dash from David. This view meant a lot to the couple and added something really special to their day. A few minutes after this picture was taken the rain arrived and pushed us all indoors…but it was too late…we had the shots.

Wedding Photography Image of the Week 03
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010Will you still love your wedding images in 40 to 60 years?
Friday, February 12th, 2010We often talk to our customers about the longevity of excellent photography; it’s not just for now or for this year, you still need to love your wedding images in decades to come. We want you to have an album that you will love and can pass down to future generations as the complete story of your day. If you make a good choice when selecting a photographer then images will become more important as the years pass. How awful would it be after a fantastic wedding day to have regrets about your photography.
There are two photographs in my possession which are incredibly important to me. One is my parents wedding photograph from 1970 (a relaxed image) and the other is my Nana and Papa’s wedding photograph from 1942 (a stiff, formal studio shot!). I wish there were more – an album of the day would be incredible.

The love between a baby, a mummy and a daddy
Thursday, February 11th, 2010The traditional idea of the baby portrait seems so tired to me. Put them on the furry rug. Snap. Sit them on your knee and force them to stare blindly towards the camera. Yawn. How boring and how uninspired. I like to think of the experience of portrait photography as a rewarding experience for parents and their baby. I believe it is so much more powerful and enduring to capture the relationship within the family. I love the interaction between a baby and mummy and daddy. Parents know all the little tricks to get their children to respond. And the emotion produced is far more real than if the stressed photographer is forcing a squeaky toy in front of them. I like my portrait sessions to be mellow and calm rather than frantic and loud. Above all I aim for images which will always have meaning no matter how much time passes.

Wedding Photography Image of the Week 02
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010It’s great when the barrier between subject and photographer has been demolished and the presence of the camera has been completely forgotten. I need that to happen for my work to be successful. Natural emotions cannot be posed. They just look false. I’m more interested in a photograph capturing a perfect moment between people than I am in spending hours getting every crease out of a dress. I love this photograph because it conveys a real sense of the relationship between the couple and how much fun they were having.

Photography of Beth Morgan Couture Millinery
Thursday, February 4th, 2010I can’t believe a year has gone by since Mark was first asked to photograph the fabulous collection of hats and fascinators by the extremely talented designer, Beth Morgan. A year on, Beth asked if Mark would photograph a collection of her newer pieces and so another shoot was organised for just prior to Christmas.
We originally got in touch with Beth when one of our brides, Pamela MacGregor, wore one of Beth’s bridal creations at a wedding Mark shot in Girona, Spain. Images from this wedding won Mark the Best Complete Wedding Photographer Award at the MPA Scottish Awards in 2009. Anyway …. a conversation ensued where Beth said ‘I would love if Pamela could model my full collection and Mark could photograph it’. We happened to know that Pamela planned to be home in Scotland for Christmas so the dream became a reality.
Hat and fascinator creations by Beth Morgan Couture are often worn to high society events and her bridal collection is also stunning. Some of her designs have been worn to Buckingham Palace, to Royal Ascot and on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
Beth offers a really friendly, down to earth service where she is always ready to help, answer questions discuss styles, source new fabrics and generally make the impossible possible! She will send feather and fabric samples and email mock up images of any number of designs; she is not happy unless the customer is happy! You can contact Beth by email beth@bethmorgan.co.uk or via her website www.bethmorgan.co.uk
Some of Mark’s images and an interview with Beth Morgan have now appeared on Love My Dress blog – an excellent style diary and wedding blog of “all things glamorous and extremely very gorgeous”.

Wedding Photography Image of the Week 01
Thursday, February 4th, 2010This bridal portrait is a favourite of mine on so many different levels. In the chaos of the bridal preparations, it represents an oasis of calm. The light in the room was really quite exquisite, I loved her veil and Lorna was perfectly beautiful.

Sub-zero photoshoot of celtic and medieval wedding dresses
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Mark and I were enjoying a meal out with friends in Edinburgh having had a hair raising journey through in freezing fog; the car thermometer had been showing -14C. Midway through the meal, we received a text from David at Lindsay Fleming Couture asking if Mark was up for a photoshoot at the derelict Crawford Castle on Sunday morning if David could find a model (mad enough) to agree. After several weeks of snow and very cold temperatures, our local area was looking very picturesque and apparently Crawford Castle was a backdrop that David had had his eye on for a while.
Mark insisted that the text was a joke! Who would he find willing to model their celtic and medieval wedding dresses at 9am on a Sunday morning when Crawford had been reaching temperatures down to -18C for several days? We replied that Mark was up for anything if David could find a model who was crazy enough …… enter the very brave Karen …..
The morning was so cold that Mark was wearing several pairs of trousers over each other just to avoid frostbite. Apparently Karen was well wrapped up under the dresses but still, the wind chill would have cut you in two. However, I think you will agree, the results were worth the sub zero experience and Karen has recovered without any ill effects!
Lindsay Fleming will be bringing their collection of celtic and medieval wedding dresses to London along with their 1920s wedding dress collection in March allowing brides the opportunity to meet the designer in person. For full details, or to make an appointment, visit their website.
