Vicki and Scott | House for an Art Lover | Wedding Photography Glasgow

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Vicki and Scott met at Heriot-Watt University in their final year. Scott proposed when they were back in Scotland for Christmas visiting family. Vicki told us, “ he gave me an advent calendar that year with a present in each pocket (sweets, make up etc). When I opened the present on the 24th, it was a ring! Actually, it was my Mum’s ring borrowed for the day as I always told him never to choose an engagement ring for me! We had been together over 10 years and it was a big surprise!”.

Scott and Vicki chose House for an Art Lover for their ceremony and reception because it was so unique and quite contemporary. Vicki said, “We also loved the fact that we could use a different room in the house for each part of the wedding and that the entire house was ours for the day. It was the perfect venue for us and we can’t wait to go there to visit again next time we are home.”

Vicki’s dress was by Mori Lee and was bought in the Glass Slipper in Dunfermline. Vicki wanted classic, simple, and old style Hollywood glamour, she especially loved the back of it.

Vicki took a limo to the venue organised through Platinum Limo, she said, “that meant I could travel together with all of the bridal party – I’d highly recommend it”.

Vicki has her shoes custom made in Hong Kong where they live. Vicki confessed, “I’m a shoe queen and had to have a pair of shoes that I could wear again. They were a brilliant blue/purple (something ‘blue’). Not sure how I managed to not wear them until the wedding day actually…. I wore my Gran’s pearl necklace as a bracelet (something ‘old’ and ‘borrowed’) and my hair piece and earrings were also from Hong Kong. My earrings had jade in them which is a hugely popular in Hong Kong – we’ve been in Hong Kong for over 6 years now and it was important to include a little of Hong Kong in our day. My lace bolero was made for me in Hoi An, Vietnam when we were on holiday there. I sent Scott to the bar across from the tailors so he wouldn’t see it.”

Vicki’s hair was done by LOX Hair Design in Dunfermline and my make up was done by Gillian at Eclipse Beauty Treatments in Inverkeithing, Vicki said, “ they came to my parents house which was great”.  Vicki used Poppy Floral Design. Vicki explained, “I wanted a really simple hand tied bouquet with a pale pink lotus flower in it – it’s a flower I associate so much with my travels in Asia and totally love when it’s in bud form.”

Scott hired his entire kilt outfit from McCalls in Glasgow and chose the Sheriff Muir Jacket with the mandarin collar. He had his shirt tailored in Hong Kong.

Vicki and Scott told us, “ We chose Archibald Photography before we even had a venue or a date for our wedding”. Vicki explained, “ I met Mark at a wedding show and fell in love with his style of photography. Candid shots of your day as it happens, rather than the usual official line up which is not our style at all.” Vicki told us her favourite photograph of the day is the shot of them in the oval room.

They hired their band “Wildcard” through Music for Scotland, “both of which were excellent”, Vicki told us. She further explained, “We were able to go along to a practice session and talk to them to make sure they were right for us. They played songs from pretty much all of our favourite bands mixed with a few golden oldies to keep our parents, aunts and uncles happy! We had a lot of great feedback on the band and they were even happy to let our friend jam with them on the night which was pretty special for us”.

Vicki and Scott’s cake was by Celebration Cakes in Dunoon.  They told them what they liked and they made them an “amazing” chocolate cake.

Vicki and Scott said, “The best thing about our day was having all our friends and family from across the world in the same place at the same time”.

Vicki told us, “There was so much potential for things to go wrong. The volcanic ash and constant airline strikes were a bit stressful for us in the lead up to the wedding. Just in the wedding party alone, we had us flying in from Hong Kong, the best man from Shanghai and one of our bridesmaids from Canada. Thankfully, we all made it and everything went perfectly on the day”.

Vicki was piped in to Highland Cathedral and told us, “Our first dance was ‘Even When I’m Sleeping’ chosen by Scott several years before we got married. We were the only people in the room who knew it and the band had learned it especially for the night”.

Wedding day makeup – what should brides think about?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

We are finding that more and more our clients are asking us, as their photographers, what they should consider with regard to their wedding day makeup.  So we turned to two of our favourite makeup artists to work with on a wedding day (Ainsley M and Alexis Miller).

Ainsley M is an award winning make-up artist specialising in bridal make-up. Trained by the London College of Fashion, Ainsley travels all over Scotland ensuring brides look flawless on their big day. She has been nominated for a VOWS award in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, winning the prestigious title for best ‘hair and beauty’ in both 2007 and 2008. In addition to bridal services, Ainsley also does commercial work including fashion shoots (e.g. Daily Record, Sunday Mail, Lindsay Fleming) and make-up for events (e.g. Pussycat Dolls at MOBO’s). She also offers make-up lessons on a ‘one to one’ and group basis plus personal make-up shopping. Bridal lessons are also offered for those who are unable to have an artist visit them on their big day.

Alexis has been a Professional Make-up and Hair Artist since 2001. Soon after leaving college she started working freelance in the TV and Film Industry, working on TV series like The Book Group, River City, Down to earth, Rebus, Bad Girls among others. She has also worked with many celebrity clients including Westlife, Chris Evans, Summer Glau, Alec Baldwin, Stephanie Beacham, Elijah Wood, James Nesbit, Danny Dyer and many others. She was also nominated for VOWS Award in 2008. Alexis is available for photoshoots, weddings and any other occasions. She also offers make-up lessons and make-up shopping. Alexis is based in Glasgow but will travel.

First off, I would like to say that although Ainsley and Alexis have provided great advice for this article, we would always suggest you try and get a professional makeup artist on your wedding day, if you can.  Whilst you might be happy doing your own makeup for a night out, don’t underestimate the extra pressure it can put you under when you are nervous on your wedding day.  As Ainsley told us “having make-up professionally applied on a wedding day is a comfort for many brides”  She believes there are several reasons for this:

  • it’s one less thing to worry about on a day when they are likely to be nervous. Being able to close their eyes for half an hour and switch off from the hustle and bustle of the day can be a welcome relief
  • an experienced make-up artist will know how to apply the make-up so it lasts all day. They know the pitfalls that need to be avoided to ensure the make-up photographs beautifully
  • it ensures continuity with the rest of the bridal party. Ideally the make-up artist should do the bridesmaids and mum’s too. It’s not only the bride’s make-up that could cause a problem in the photographs! For example, being neutral, it’s usually much easier for a make-up artist to convince a bridesmaid that black smokey eyes, lashings of bronzer and red lips is not really appropriate for the day
  • any last minute blemishes or skin problems can be dealt with without panic
  • it’s fun! Most make-up artists love their job and will be a friendly and calm addition to the wedding morning.

Alexis makes a great point about actually looking like ‘you’ – “It’s your wedding day….you put time, money and dreams into this one day but you will have your pictures for a lifetime.  So you want to look a better, more flawless, glamourous but natural version of yourself.  Your fiancé fell in love with you as you are so changing your look dramatically is never a good idea.  Don’t be too swayed by trends, as after the band has packed up your photos will be around for a long time and you don’t want to look back and cringe because your look was very ‘of the now’.  Classic is always best, at the same time you don’t want to ‘underdo’ your make-up as white dresses can be draining, so make sure you have a peachy/rosy blush.”

So onto the best makeup tips:

Be careful when using SPFs:

Ainsley warns brides to be aware of the ingredient list in their foundation with SPF.  As she points out “although wearing an SPF everyday will undoubtedly protect your skin and keep you looking young, when it comes to photography it can cause some issues. Ingredients such as Titanium Dioxide found in SPF’s work by reflecting light off the skin. As a result, when flash photography is used, a white cast can often be seen, making your face a lighter colour than your body.  When choosing a foundation for your wedding, try and pick one which does not contain this at the top of its ingredients list. For example, I use several Laura Mercier foundations and tinted moisturisers which all contain titanium dioxide and these all photograph well. The titanium dioxide with these is one of the last ingredients on the list.”

Pale is beautiful!

From our point of view, fake tan can be the hardest thing to photograph.  Some good advice from Alexis is to “keep tans soft and subtle, extremely tanned faces don’t photograph well and your groom will just look pale in comparison.”

Use a Primer:

Alexis tells us “a primer is a must as it helps even out skin tone, helps with open pores and oil and helps everything last for the duration.  All of the brands now carry primers but my favourites are Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown.”

Whilst Ainsley points out that “a make-up primer will help your foundation last longer and will also improve the look of your skin. Laura Mercier’s primers are excellent. Apply a thin layer of primer, followed by a few thin layers of foundation to make your base last all day. This is particularly important for summer weddings.”

Try to keep eye colours matte or soft shimmer:

Ainsley mentions that “matte eye colours will show up more than overly shimmery shadows which can sometimes disappear in photography. However a lot of brides prefer a subtle shimmer to a flat matte so a good compromise is a soft shimmer on the lid with a matte colour in the socket line to create depth.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with eye colours that you may not have worn before. A lot of women with blue eyes assume grey is the best colour for them. Although this will suit them, a warmer bronze tone will usually look more striking. For green eyes and brown eyes, I love purple tones.”

Alexis advises making “sure your eyes are well defined or they will disappear in your photographs.  Defined brows, dark lashes and a nicely defined socket will do the trick.  Waterproof mascara is a must.”

Go easy with the highlighter and avoid shimmer/glitter setting powder and blusher:

According to Ainsley, “the key to using highlighter is to use a very small amount on a couple of key areas only. Never use a highlighter all over the face as you will just look sweaty in your photographs. Keep it to the very top of the cheekbone, bridge of nose, under the brow bone and the cupid’s bow. Keep it completely away from the middle of the face, particularly around the sides of the nose, chin and forehead. Shimmer or glitter on the face or body should be avoided if flash photography is being used. It may look pretty in the flesh but the camera will hate it, and in return it will distort your make-up. If you do like a little bit of shimmer then just add it where you would add highlighter i.e. top of cheekbone, bridge of nose, under brow bone and cupid’s bow.  In normal day to day life, light reflecting concealers are great for diffusing darkness under the eye. However in flash photography, these can also create the ‘white cast’ effect. I prefer to use under eye concealers such as Bobbi Brown creamy concealer which don’t bounce off the flash.”

While Alexis suggests “keeping shimmery powders to a minimum particularly under the eyes.  A little shimmer on the high points of the cheeks, apples of cheeks and collarbone/shoulders is nice but keep it subtle.  Mac Strobe cream and Tess Dalys’ Daly Face Glow for M+S are both perfect.”

Liner is your friend:

Ainsley is clear that “the key to beautifully defined eyes is liner. Gel liners such as Bobbi Brown’s are incredible for getting a dense line very close to the base of the lashline. Applying mascara to the very root of the lashes will also help. If you are very fair, consider getting your lashes tinted. This makes a huge difference, but be sure to get a skin test done first.  Adding false lashes, whether a strip or individuals, can also help to create definition.”

Apply Powder:

Another tip from Alexis is that “a pressed translucent powder or blotting papers are really handy to make sure your T-Zone isn’t too shiny prior too your photos.  Bobbi Brown and Clinique have nice ones.”

Ainsley‘s golden tip is as follows “unless you have oily skin it’s not necessary to powder all over. However it is essential for all skin types that the forehead, nose, sides of nose and chin are kept shine free. If you have a drier skin, keeping the top of the cheekbones a little dewy often looks better.”

Don’t forget the brows:

Ainsley points out that “brows frame your eyes and make the world of difference to your make-up. However a lot of brides underestimate this. Make sure they are neatly groomed (threading is great) and filled in with a natural shadow or pencil to create definition.”

Make it last:

Alexis suggests you “take advantage of long lasting formulas, especially foundations and lipstick.  Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation and Double Wear Light (slightly lighter coverage) are very good for coverage and long lasting.  Double Wear also have lipsticks and mascara in their range.  For a lighter coverage, I recommend Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser.  It has a better coverage than most tinted moisturisers but looks flawless and natural. The most important thing is getting your base right as it will help everything else just fall into place.  A must is your lipstick or gloss for touch ups throughout the day.  L’Oreal 6hr gloss is long lasting and not too sticky.  Mac and Bobbi Brown have a wide range of lipsticks to suit everyone.”

A huge thank you to both Ainsley M and Alexis Miller for taking the time to share these tips and tricks on making sure your wedding makeup is flawless and beautiful.

Lauren & Ben’s Wedding at House for an Art Lover, Glasgow

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Ben and Lauren originally met in Liverpool where they were both working in a hospital. Apparently they fell in love over a ping-pong table but Ben likes to point out that he won the game! Their first kiss was on a Friday the 13th and the couple celebrate every Friday the 13th as a little mini-anniversary with good food and wine! They had been together for 4 happy years before finally getting hitched (despite numerous and regular hints by Lauren).

Ben took Lauren on a surprise weekend trip to stay at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons in Oxford on a Friday the 13th. The couple stayed in the stunning Opium suite and during the tasting menu (course 8 of 10) Ben came round to Lauren’s seat and asked her to marry him in Hebrew (which he had specially learned for the occasion, Lauren being born in Israel). Lauren says she can’t remember any of the food from the last two courses!

Lauren and Ben chose House For An Art Lover as it had such an intimate, special and unique atmosphere that really sets it apart as a venue from the many others they had seen. As soon as they saw it the couple knew it was the right place for their wedding; and as they told us afterwards “it totally lived up to our expectations on the day!”

Lauren did her own make-up after a trial/lesson with “the amazing Stacey” from Mac Make-up in SoHo.  Hair was by Douglas from Douglas & Lee hairdressers, Bath Street, Glasgow and Lauren told us that “he was highly recommended to me by my great friend Mel who has been going to him for over a decade!”

Lauren’s dress was a bespoke version of ‘Beauty’ with ‘Calypso’ veil by Caroline Castigliano, Knightsbridge, shoes were Jimmy Choo and her jewellery was by Mikomoto, Bond Street.

Flowers for the day where done by Glasgow City Flowers (part of Glasgow City Council) and Lauren told us that “their head florist was so great that when I decided to change the colour of the pink rose a week before the day they didn’t complain and managed to make the last minute changes look fantastic”.

The couple bought their cake from Waitrose and had it decorated by their florist. Lauren told us “we chose an orchid to decorate the cake in memory of my Nana who was dearly loved by everyone and greatly missed on the day”.

A ceilidh on the evening of the wedding was provided by The Hebrideans which was thoroughly enjoyed, especially by the English guests! The couple also had a DJ friend (Rich Beats) whom they trusted to play music from Ben’s extensive vinyl collection of jazz & world music.

Lauren and Ben also loved “the fantastic” Rose Street Quartet from Edinburgh who played during their ceremony. As Lauren told us “they were wonderful, played so beautifully and as a special surprise I had arranged for then to play the Star Wars theme tune for Ben whilst he was awaiting my arrival!! This was much appreciated by Ben and indeed much of the congregation that are aware of his passion for everything Star Wars related!”

The couple’s videographer was Vince McDonald and their transport was a gorgeous silver Beauford that Lauren’s mum booked for them.

Ben and Lauren told us they were impressed from the very beginning with Archibald Photography‘s “professional website which hosts such wonderful photographs”. As they told us “we had nothing but friendly communication with Donna and Mark, confirmed as soon as we came to meet Mark when we knew we had met someone who we would trust completely on the day but also someone we would love to have had a pint or two with!! Looking through the “back-catalogue” of his wedding albums we really were blown away with the quality. This was all before the wedding day itself! On the day it felt like we had invited a friend, we were completely relaxed and had such fun having our photographs taken. We genuinely wished he could have stayed to party on after the job was done, all our family and friends thought he was an absolute star!! We have all attended many weddings when we wished the photographer would hurry up and leave so that we can relax and enjoy the occasion, the total opposite of how we felt about Mark and were actually really sad when the time came for him to leave. What’s left to say but thank you, thank you, thank you, you really deserve winning the VOWS Award and our photographs are totally stunning!!”

Lauren and Ben said that their favourite image changes daily but is currently the one in which we share a kiss with the dark wooden background drinking champagne.

Ben and Lauren’s day had all the ingredients of an unforgettable experience – “we had our close family and friends there, our special music, fab food and a unique venue. The couple also had two pregnant bridesmaids (both choosing to tell Lauren during the same weekend without knowing each other!!) so as Lauren said “there for four for the price of two; such a bonus!”

Bridal preparations

The couple chose five readings to have during the ceremony which Lauren told us “were particularly amazing, especially given the heartfelt and emotional response from our friends and family that read them!” And for Lauren, the best thing about the day was “marrying my best friend”.

The Wedding Kiss

Was there anything that didn’t go to plan? Lauren’s left false eyelash let her down but everything else was “perfect”. The couple would sum up the whole experience as “Barcarolle’ from the Tales of Hoffman by Jacques Offenbach.

Photography of Lindsay Fleming’s new collection of 20s inspired wedding dresses – All That Jazz

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Mark had the honour this week of being commissioned to photograph Lindsay Fleming‘s new collection of 20s inspired wedding dresses; a range called All That Jazz.  The dresses are phenomenal and I would imagine they are going to be a big hit with brides looking to add the class of a vintage inspired dress to their day.  Lindsay Fleming are award winning Scottish bridal designers traditionally best known for their celtic inspired creations.  This new 20s range is an exciting new range to their collection offered both as made to measure and as a mail order service.  To find out more, contact Grace on 01864 502522 or by email Bridal@Lindsayfleming.com or visit The Scottish Wedding Show at the SECC where the new designs will be premiered on the catwalk.

The gorgeous Lauren Tempany modelled the new creations by Grace Lindsay of Lindsay Fleming and stunning headpieces were created for the shoot by Baba-C Designs.

Ainsley M provided the 20s style make-up – heavy dark eyes and red lips – while Lidia of Volume Hair styled Lauren’s hair to suit the vintage theme.  House for an Art Lover was used as a venue to provide an art deco backdrop.

Laura & Barry’s wedding at House for an Art Lover

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Laura and Barry first met in the Tunnel Night Club in Glasgow and were together for 8 years before they got married. Barry proposed to Laura when they were on holiday in Malta, summer 2008.

wedding photography house for an art lover 19 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

When they were planning their wedding, they decided they wanted somewhere that was in Glasgow with good access for guests and good food. House for an Art Lover came out as top choice; this fantastic venue , designed by Charles Rennie Macintosh, is situated within the vast acres of Bellahouston Park but is easily accessible for all transport links. As Laura told us “the staff were very good and made sure everything ran smoothly. They made the wedding easy to organise as we had to do most of it over the phone. House for an Art Lover is such a nice venue and has a lovely interior unlike a lot of places that look lovely outside but could be anywhere inside. We liked the contrast of the dark panelled room where the ceremony was and the bright piano room where the meal was held.”

wedding photography house for an art lover 16 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

Laura got her dress and veil from Pronovias in London. Laura told us that the staff were lovely and had an amazing selection of dresses but it was a bit of a challenge getting her dress back to Glasgow on the train!

wedding photography house for an art lover 08 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

Flowers were organised through David Austin Roses and as Laura said “Jane at David Austin was great; she totally understood the look I wanted and gave me beautiful roses that also smelled wonderful.”

wedding photography house for an art lover 02 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

Laura and Barry chose to have a Humanist ceremony. They said Gerrie Douglas-Scott was great. The ceremony was made really special by Gerrie helping them write their own individual vows. A hilarious moment occurred during the ceremony as Ross, the best man, had put the rings on his fingers before the ceremony so he didn’t lose them. But as he has quite large hands, he struggled to get them off his fingers – luckily he succeeded!

wedding photography house for an art lover 09 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

Archibald Photography were selected as photographers for the day as Laura and Barry had seen some of Mark’s photographs in magazines. They liked Mark’s style and wanted photos that were natural and weren’t too cheesy. Laura and Barry told us that they loved their photos and “Mark was lovely at the wedding and not bossy! This made us feel good and relaxed in the photos and think he really captured our wedding day.”

wedding photography house for an art lover 13 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

The best bit of the day for the couple was seeing each other for the first time and having their fab photos to look back on. Laura said “seeing each other for the first time was a really special moment and having all our friends and family there made our day even more special.”

wedding photography house for an art lover 23 Laura & Barrys wedding at House for an Art Lover

The evening’s entertainment was provided by Laura’s brother and his friend. However, the bridesmaids through the music wasn’t ‘cheesy’ enough for their liking which led to the funniest moment in the day. The bridesmaids hijacked the PA system and put on their own music with their iPods!

When we asked Laura and Barry how they would you sum up the whole experience of their wedding day, they said “the most amazing day”! You can’t ask for more than that.

Hazel & David’s Wedding Photography at House for an Art Lover, Glasgow

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The start of 2009 has been so busy we have been struggling to keep our blog up-to-date.  Every wedding so far this year has been amazing in terms of working with great couples at great venues with great photography results!

In March, Mark was back again at House for an Art Lover in Glasgow for Hazel & David’s wedding.  House for an Art Lover is a fab venue both inside and out which is always a bonus in unpredictable Scottish weather.  Hazel and David were lucky with the weather though and as you can see from the photos, they were both very photogenic as a couple and Hazel especially just laughed all day!

Hazel and David originally met at a property industry function when they were both in fancy dress.  David’s proposal took place when he took Hazel on a skiing trip to the Italian Alps. It was only Hazel’s second time skiing so she spent most of her time on her behind! After falling down a difficult ski run, Hazel’s skis came right off and she was ready for tears. David then chose that moment to propose. Surrounded by the beautiful Italian mountains covered in white snow and looking at the man she loved, she could say nothing but yes!

David & Hazel chose House for an Art Lover because it was close to home in Glasgow. As Hazel said “we fell in love with it the minute we saw it and knew it was the right place – modern yet steeped in tradition. The team there worked with us and made sure everything went like clockwork on the day.”

Hazel wore a beautiful white bridal saree which was tailored and sewn by her mum. Her wedding jewellery came from Tiffany and Boodles.

The couple’s flowers came from Mood Flowers in Anniesland who were recommended by the venue. Hazel told us that they did shop around a bit but as their wedding was the day before Mothers’ Day many florists were not willing to delivery on the day. Moods were more expensive than some of the other florists but the arrangements were really nice so Hazel & David were happy on the day.

David & Hazel did a lot of the wedding organisation and supply themselves. However, the felt the wedding car company were fantastic and would recommend them to anyone – Waterside Cars. Hazel said to us “we were due to leave the venue in an Aston Martin but when we made a comment about my saree getting crushed, Waterside Cars took initiative, got the go ahead from David and arranged to collect us in a big spacious bentley instead.”

Hazel and David saw a few photographers and didn’t click with any of them.  Hazel said they all appeared to ‘know best’ and had little different to offer.  She told us “We liked Mark.  We liked his attitude and his work and having reviewed other wedding albums knew he was what we were looking for.  I also liked the fact that he came round to my parents house before the wedding.  Our photos were the one of the most important elements of our wedding and our treasure trove for years to come.”

When asked what the best bit of the day was, Hazel said “seeing my parents smile and having our family and friends share our big day.”

The funniest part of the day was Hazel’s brother’s speech. “Very funny and a complete surprise.”
