A lovely moment – Kimberley had just come down the stairs and her Dad saw her in her dress for the first time.

Monday, August 8th, 2011As I am exporting their album to send to print, I am reminded of how much I love this image of Anna and Kevin married at Fernie Castle in Fife. What a cheeky look!
Katharine + Guy | An Edinburgh elopement
Saturday, July 9th, 2011Mark loves to photograph an wedding elopement – so intimate and romantic! Katharine and Guy got in touch with us and asked Mark to photograph their day- they live in Australia and chose Scotland for their elopement because the wedding would still be legal back home. Apart from Guy and Katharine, the only other people involved in their day were the minister, two witnesses, Mark and two cab drivers.
Katharine’s dress & shoes were Wayne Cooper (an Australian designer). Katharine told us “it was nerve wracking traveling with them although I had chosen a dress designed to be crushed. I couldn’t pack it in my carry on because it was 5% metal – so I just had to hope the luggage didn’t get lost!”
Guy and Katharine emailed a few different churches and said “the people at St Cuthbert’s were just so lovely and welcoming and made everything so easy for us that it was easy to choose them!”
These guys loved the weather; it was raining and really foggy and according to them”so exotic” (think they could teach us Scots a few things on thinking positively about our climate!) For them, they come from years and years of drought so having wet weather was “really special but also made the wedding really feel Scottish; if we’d wanted sunshine and dry weather we would have stayed in Australia”.
Katharine told us after that it was great going round Edinburgh with Mark. She said “the photos were amazing but having him tell us all about the places we were seeing was like having a personal tour of the city as well. My shoes were impossibly high which meant Guy and I were holding hands in almost every shot (very romantic) but walking on the cobbles was challenging! One of my favourite moments was when, coming down from the Royal Mile, I took a few steps with my shoes off – the cold wet cobbles felt so good! We had a fabulous day exploring Edinburgh and we wanted to get funky shots of us all over Edinburgh (and that’s exactly what we got)!
Here are some of our favourite images:
Kirsty and Melvin’s Wedding Photography | Glenskirlie Castle | Central Scotland
Saturday, February 19th, 2011Back in January 2010 when the winter snow was melting fast, Kirsty and Melvin got married at the fabulous Glenskirlie Castle. In the heart of Central Scotland, Glenskirlie Castle is a sumptuous boutique style hotel with a great team of staff who ensure a wedding day runs extremely smoothly.
The snow had turned to a freezing drizzle discouraging anyone from venturing outside but the amazing interior of Glenskirlie Castle meant that Mark was able to provide Kirsty and Melvin with a stunning set of images telling the story of their wedding day. Kirsty looked gorgeous and reminded everyone of a Greek goddess – Melvin looked pretty good too!
Kirsty and Melvin met at work on a management assessment day. Kirsty told us, “Melvin was thrilled when they explained that part of the day would be role playing and replied ‘I’ll be Russell Crowe then!”. After Melvin asking Kirsty’s father in a traditional manner, Melvin proposed to Kirsty on Christmas day.
They chose Glenskirlie because they said, “it was beautiful, the food was amazing, the staff were attentive and the honeymoon suite was stunning!”
Kirsty’s dress was by Ellis Bridals bought in Signature in Glasgow. It was the first one she tried on and she said, “When my bridesmaid shed a tear I knew it was the one for me!” Kirsty’s hair was done by Bensons in Lanark and her make up by Esther. Melvin chose his outfit from Mackenzie Menswear, Glasgow
Kirsty wanted her flowers to tie everything in and the bridesmaids were in red so after one visit to Gifted in Carluke everything was sorted, “no hassle at all”, Kirsty told us. Kirsty and Melvin’s cake was purchased from Marks and Spencer.
Kirsty and Melvin told us they booked “R4. The best band ever!! They did say our wedding was one of the best they had ever played – the dancefloor was jumping all night!”. The couple’s first dance was the Proclaimers ‘I want to spend my life with you!’ Kirsty told us, “It was a jolly, upbeat song and the words were relevant to us”. They also had a magician who was incredible, Mick Magic – he kept the guests entertained during the bands break.
Kirsty told us, “My dad loved Mark’s work when he was searching the internet and then when we came to meet you both we were really impressed with how little time was going to be spent having photos taken – It was my idea of hell spending hours getting photos taken – I loved how natural Marks photos were”.
“I think my favourite picture”, Kirsty told us, “is the picture with my mum and I – we both look really happy!”
Kirsty’s niece also featured in their special day, Kirsty told us, “She played the piano to a lovely piece of music as I walked down the aisle.”
Melvin and I loved every moment but Kirsty confessed that she loved getting ready and feeling pampered in the morning. Both Melvin and Kirsty told us they had experienced, “The Perfect Day.”
Paul and Pamela’s Wedding Photography | Motherwell Cathedral & Dunblane Hydro
Wednesday, February 9th, 2011Paul and Pamela met through a mutual friend at school about 10 years ago. Paul proposed to Pamela in the perfect setting; on top of the Eiffel Tower when they went Christmas Shopping in Paris.
When Pamela was a child she visited Dunblane and it held great memories for her. As they wanted a large venue where their guest could do their own thing, Dunblane Hydro was the perfect setting and as Pamela said “the tall ceilings and the gardens at the venue were a plus”. Motherwell Cathedral provided the dramatic backdrop for their ceremony.
Pamela bought a Suzanne Neville dress from Eleganza Sponza in Glasgow, she worked with the seamstress and added her own details to make it the dress she always dreamed of, Pamela said, “it was simply and classy”. Pamela accompanied the dress with the most sparkly Jimmy Choos she could find, “they were stunning” Pamela said. “they were a great alternative to the usual satin wedding shoe”.
Floral and Hardy in Lanark supplied the orchids in Pamela’s feminine flower bouquet. Pamela confessed to us that “the flowers at the venue were a big expense but what an impact they made”. The following day at lunch Pamela gifted the flowers to all her Aunties. Not forgetting Paul’s button hole which was lovely against his black kilt jacket.
For Mark, Pamela and Paul’s wedding was great to photograph; the weather was stunning and the couple had booked two dramatic venues by choosing Dunblane Hydro and Motherwell Cathedral. Probably the only challenge of the day was coping with just how bright and sunny it was!
Paul wore the Black Island Tartan Kilt, “he wasn’t too sure at first”, Pamela said “but as soon as he tried the whole outfit on he loved it”.
Paul and Pamela told us they chose Archibald Photography as Mark’s style was very relaxed. The couple don’t like having their photographs taken but said “when we came for our preview we couldn’t even remember Mark taking some of the pictures”.
The cars; “I loved our cars”, said Pamela, “we had a Rolls Royce along with two Bentleys” provided by Sinclair Cars in Uddingston. “The drivers were fantastic and kept me very calm”, said Pamela.
Pamela wanted a simple but classy cake, Special Days Cakes in Uddingston made the four tier cake decorated with orchids, “I loved it”, said Pamela and “it all tied in very well”.
The evening entertainment was supplied by Big Night Out Band. They were fantastic and did a mixture of music, “We were on our feet all night”, said Paul and Pamela.
Pamela said “The whole day was amazing from start to finish ……. I loved every minute!!”. Everything went as it should have ……”well actually”, Pamela told us, “Paul decided to tell me that his wedding ring didn’t fit and forgot he was all miked up for the video!”.
Simply put by Paul and Pamela “It was the best day of our lives we just smiled and laughed the whole day. Thanks to Archibald Photography for the memories you have captured from our wonderful day!”
Mark Archibald is “one of Scotlands most skillful and creative photographers”
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010Last year, Mark was really overwhelmed to become the winner of Complete Wedding Category of the Master Photographer Association Awards 2009 (Scottish Region). To enter you must submit 10 images from one wedding and the award reflects consistency in technical excellence.
The awards were judged by two fantastic and UK leading photographers - Bella West and Simon Johns. They both provided feedback on why Mark was awarded this prestigious award as follows:
“Mark Archibald’s collection of images defined him as one of Scotland’s most skillful and creative photographers. Within the ten images from one wedding, Mark demonstrated his eye for light, colour, composition, graphic and emotion – all the areas which today’s bride want to see within their wedding photographs. Alongside this, Mark has used the wonderful environment of this wedding and incorporated it within the story. Mark has managed to demonstrate all the elements of a wedding within just ten images.” – Bella West (In 2008 Bella was awarded the most prestigious and respected accolade, that of Fellowship in not one, but two of the leading professional bodies – the British Institute of Professional Photography and the Master Photographers Association – one of only a handful of females to be recognised at this level.)
“A stunning set of images, full of drama and story telling. I liked the informality Mark captured. Observed with a keen eye and great sense of humility.” – Simon John (Simon John is one of the most celebrated photographers in the UK and was awarded his Fellowship of the British Institute of Professional Photography at a prestigious ceremony held at the House of Commons Westminster in 1996.)

Anna & Kev’s Wedding at Fernie Castle, Fife
Friday, September 11th, 2009Anna & Kev first met in a hotel in Maidenhead. Being in retail at the time, they had the same job in different areas of the country and met while on a management training course. Anna was living and working in Dundee and Kev in Sheffield. Through the wonders of mobile telephones they kept in daily contact for about a month and then Anna went down to see Kev about a month later and that was that! The couple did long distance for 6 months and then Kev moved up to Scotland. They’ve been together 3 years now.
Kev proposed to Anna. As Anna told us “it was on Christmas morning, just us in our little flat under the christmas tree. I had no idea and the ring was disguised in a big box under the tree that I had been shaking and trying to figure out for about 3 weeks!”
For the location of the wedding Anna & Kev wanted somewhere close. Although Anna has lived in Dundee most of her adult life, she was born and brought up in Fife and so started looking there. Anna told us “I fell in love with Fernie Castle, not too over the top despite being classed as a castle, really cute and Scottish and we could get married outside which was something I always wanted. I felt it was very successful, everything we requested was done, no dramas or incidents leading up to the wedding and the day ran smoothly thanks to Ashley the manager.”
Anna’s hair was done at her hairdresser in Dundee; Saks and makeup for Anna, bridesmaids and MOB was done by Eye Candy Scotland run by a very lovely and professional lady called Lynne Mills.
Anna’s gorgeous dress was from a shop called The Bride in Broughty Ferry. Anna told us it was “the best bridalwear store for service I visited by a million miles and I did venture to quite a number! Elaine who owns and runs the store is brilliant!!” Anna also wore a necklace that was hand made for her by a jewellers called Number 5 in Cupar.
Cake and mini cakes were provided by Macmocakes and according to Anna “again, brilliant service and one of the most delicious cakes i’ve ever tasted (chocolate) Couldn’t bring myself to eat my lemon mini mo as they were just too cute.”
Another supplier considered worth a mention by Anna would be Finishing Touches by Adele in Kirkcaldy. “The room was done up beautifully by her, Adele actually comes herself and irons and dresses everything herself. Excellent service and can provide pretty much everything you could need for your tables. Having visited her shop although she didn’t provide my stationary the stuff she has in her store is gorgeous and I probably would have gone with her if I hadn’t already organised it before meeting her.”
Anna & Kev’s photography search started through the Scottish Wedding Directory where they basically googled all the adverts that they liked. Anna told us that Archibald Photography “was one of the first I really liked the look of. Marks style was the kind of thing I was looking for and after meeting with him our decision was made. I was more than happy with the service, especially on the big day!”
She continued “Our favourite image is too tough to pick! The one on the front of our proofbook is one of my favourites whilst Kev’s are the 2 sepia ones in front of the turrett. I also love the ones of me and my bridesmaids laughing, we all look fab! Lots of the first dance ones too, theres just too many amazing ones!”
The couple’s evening entertainment was a band called Real Easy from Glasgow. As Anna told us “I think they were one of the highlights of the day, absolutely brilliant! People were dancing from the minute they started right up until the end of the night. The dance floor was packed! Everybody commented on how good they were and I would recommend them to everyone who wants a good mix of old and new music that people will want to boogie to.”
The best thing about Anna & Kev’s day was “the actual getting married of course!” Although it all flew by in a bit of a blur for them, saying their vows and being told they were now husband and wife was “amazing!”. The only bit that didn’t go to plan was the couple’s florist arrangements which unfortunately actually caused delays to their day.
The whole day was special for the couple. As Anna said “I think we managed to plan and organise it perfectly for us exactly how we wanted it! Don’t think it was anything specific we did, we just brought the right people and elements together to make it how we wanted it. I would sum up the whole experience as amazing amazing amazing! I want to do it all over again, it really was the best day ever and I can’t believe its all over!”
Here’s more of our favourites from the day:
What a cheeky look!
Vicky & David’s Wedding Photography at Cornhill House, Biggar
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009Vicky & David knew each other through mutual friends for years before they got together. As Vicky told us “It wasn’t until Dave got his hair cut in to a skin head that I really began to notice him at T in the Park in 1998. I told my friend Lorna that I quite liked him and Lorna then told her brother Neil – Dave’s best mate. They both hatched a plan to get us together one night at Pressure at The Arches in Glasgow on May 1999. Neil in particular wasn’t very good at matchmaking as I left The Arches thinking it was Neil who wanted to go out with me and I wasn’t very keen on that. However, things were clarified the next day and Dave phoned and asked me out on a date and rest is history. We got together on 28th May 1999 and got married on 23rd May 2009 so it was almost ten years from our first date to the day we got married. Slow and steady wins the race and all that!”
Dave proposed to Vicky when they were on holiday in Australia for Vicky’s 30th Birthday in November 2007 and her parents were with them. Vicky said “Dave and I went on our own mini break up to Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays. We had a fantastic 5 days and on our last night decided to have a meal at the hotel beside the infinity pool. Looking back, Dave was a bit fidgety and nervous but I never suspected anything. At the end of our meal Dave asked what I wanted to do now and I suggested a walk along the beach. Little did I know that I was making things easier for him and setting up the perfect spot for him to propose. After a short walk he crouched down and I thought he had just decided to sit down and was going to get more drinks from the hotel bar, however, he only went down on one knee and when I realized what was happening I went in to hysterics, laughing uncontrollably, so much so that he had to restrain me and ask me to be quiet in order that he could ask the all important question. When I managed to stop laughing, I then started crying and Dave had to once again sort me out and then he popped the question. The first thing I said was “have you asked my dad if its okay?” and he said yes, and rather than me say “Yes”, I then said “When did you ask him”, “When were you on your own with my dad” – eventually Dave, firmly but fairly explained that the finer details really weren’t relevant at this stage and would I just give him a simple yes or no. I shouted Yes and the rest is a bit if a blur! I was totally taken by surprise as we had never discussed marriage before.”
Vicky got her Jenny Packham dress from Pan Pan Bridal in Edinburgh. She told us “Li Gorman, who owns the shop, was fantastic and never put any pressure on me to buy a certain dress and I just felt really comfortable in her hands and she was really honest about what suited me and what didn’t. My mum and I enjoyed the whole experience so much that my mum got Li to make her an outfit as she designs her own stuff as well as selling other bridal designers. My hair band and bracelet were vintage accessories which Kirsty Taylor from Flo & Percy sourced for me. I absolutely loved them and although we had to do everything via email as Kirsty is based in London, she kept me up to date with the designs, etc, every step of the way. My headband was a real talking point on the day.”

Vicky & Dave chose Cornhill House purely on feedback from friends who had been at weddings there. They liked the idea of being able to get married there as well as they don’t go to church and so a church wedding was out of the question. They booked the date and the venue without ever having been there which may seem to some a bit of a risk. But the couple wanted to keep the wedding fairly local and Cornhill seemed like the obvious choice.
When Dave & Vicky finally managed to get to Cornhill House and view it, some weeks later, they were really impressed with what they saw and knew they had made the right choice. As Vicky told us “Mae Fraioli put us at ease and filled us with every confidence that we would have the wedding we had dreamed of without any hitches and she was true to her word. The whole of the staff team were very personable and you felt as if they were helping because they wanted to and not because they had to. The day ran with military precision and we were happy to go with the flow as the hotel staff were the professionals and knew what they were doing. The day went without a hitch and our guests are still talking about the food – especially the bangers & mash that we had at night instead of the traditional buffet.”
For flowers, Vicky said it was only ever going to be Floral n Hardy in Lanark. Lisa and her team at Floral n Hardy were the second thing that Vicky booked after the venue!
For hair and makeup, Vicky used a company called Sparkle who are two girls, Catherine & Kirsten, and both do hair and make-up. Vicky told us “they were great and loved the fact that we were all quite relaxed about what we wanted to look like so they had a free reign”.
Other suppliers on the day who were worthy of mention by the couple were their stationers, Fairycake Cards, were “very helpful and great value for money”. They also used Berry Scrumptious for some pre dinner nibbles and delicious “Bride and Groom” strawberries – apparently Claire who runs the company was very patient and understanding when Vicky kept changing the numbers!
A special mention by Vicky & Dave also goes to Walker Slater in Edinburgh who made Dave’s suit as he felt like royalty in it.
Vicky told us that they chose Archibald Photography because our website showed the kind of images that they wanted. Vicky also said our website “said that Mark preferred natural photographs and we just felt that he would cater for our needs and not have everyone standing on ceremony for hours on end. After we visited your studio and met Mark and yourself we instantly felt that we would be comfortable on the day. I really don’t like getting my photo taken and the thought of the “photos” at the wedding was filling me with dread but all those feelings went away after our first meeting. Mark was fantastic on the day – he blended in just like a guest, many people actually thought he was a guest – the fact that he didn’t use a flash meant he could capture moments without anyone noticing. His attitude on the day is to get the job done as quickly and as painlessly as possible to allow everyone to get on with enjoying the day and that is exactly what he did. The end result was really natural photographs that totally capture all the elements of the day and we couldn’t be happier with them. I’ve shown them to many people and all have said that they have not seen such beautiful wedding photographs – not just because we are in them, but the colours, natural expressions, etc, make them appear so different from any that they had seen before. And of course the aftercare by Donna has been wonderful – nothing seems like a hassle and you want to ensure that the end product is exactly what we want and not what is easiest for you to design.”
We asked Vicky what her favourite image from her wedding was – “There are so many but I think the one that really stands out for the people in it and the background is the one of all of Dave, his best man, the ushers and Neil the toast master. They are striding up the gardens with Tinto in the background – they look like a scene out of reservoir dogs. It’s a very powerful image but fun at the same time.”
Vicky’s Mum and Dad’s best friends, Drew and Alison, gave them their cake as a wedding gift. The couple chose Special Days in Uddingston to make the cake and it was delicious.
When we asked Vicky what the best bit of their day was, she told us “just spending it with all of our friends and family was really special but walking in to the reception to take our seats for dinner was fantastic – everyone was cheering and clapping and stamping their feet, the noise was incredible.”
Vicky and Dave generously decided not to give out favours but put the money to better use by giving it to charity. As Vicky told us “Neil, our good friend and toastmaster, is in the army and has been in Afghanistan and his stories coupled with what you see in the press helped us decide to give our donation to the “Help for Heroes” campaign to help all of our service men and women who have been injured in combat. We gave a donation and also bought Hero Bears to give to the children who were at the wedding.”
The evening entertainment was provided by the band Corra. As Vicky said “they were great and played the type of music that we wanted with no “Loch Lomond” at the end of the night or Robbie Williams! They did a bit of everything which kept the dance floor busy. We’ve had a few people ask for their name and number so I reckon they went down well.”
As with all wedding days, there were some funny bits for the couple. One moment for Vicky was “waking up at my mums on the morning of the wedding to find Lorna & Lynne, my bridesmaids, doing some kind of mad Jane Fonda style work-out to motown music to get them “pumped up” for the day ahead.
Vicky and Dave also had a bit of a laugh when the whole top table did a mexican wave and only one of the guest tables noticed. They then started whooping and cheering and everyone started cheering at them instead of the top table!
We asked Vicky and Dave how they would sum up their day. One word was their response “MAGIC!”
Nadeem & Lisa’s Wedding Photography at Dundas Castle
Monday, August 31st, 2009Amazing day at Dundas Castle yesterday. It hung in the balance for a while but in the end we went for it…OUTDOOR CEREMONY! A first for Dundas Castle and what a success.
Lisa looked almost impossibly georgeous and simply took Nadeem’s breath away as she appeared around the side of the beautiful castle. I love the freedom of an outdoor ceremony as it gives me room to shoot and move around unnoticed a little more than usual. Can’t wait to show you all the photographs. Watch this space!
