Bonnie Prince Billy | Music Photography | Celtic Connections Scotland

Here is some more of my music photography.

Bonnie Prince Billy (aka…Will Oldham…aka…Palace Brothers) has made some of my favourite music of all time. I consider Master & Everyone to be one of the best records I have ever heard. When music means a lot to you and certain songs really resonate with you as a person it sends shivers down your neck to hear them performed live. I was so privileged to be able to photograph this incredible gig at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow. It’s not the first time I’ve seen him live but it was the largest venue I’ve seen him perform in. Will Oldham doesn’t play it safe live. The songs don’t sound like they do on the record. He reinterprets his own work all the time rather like Lou Reed used to. Every time I see him it is like listening to a new release. His performances are charged with humour and unpredictable energy. The quality and breadth of his songwriting and lyrical content carries him towards the greats. Johnny Cash recognised this in choosing to cover I See A Darkness.

Earlier at Celtic Connections Will joined my friend Nuala Kennedy for a one-off performance. Read about that gig in my next post.
