Reportage wedding photography is an art form. Those who think a photojournalistic approach on a wedding day simply means snapping thousands of pictures in the hope of getting a good one don’t fully understand it. Photojournalism in general is about creating stories. These can be small stories hidden inside a larger story (such as the wedding day itself). This little story revolves around Jenny’s proud Dad waiting to see his daughter in her dress for the first time. It marks that moment when things begin to feel suddenly real and the months of preparation, planning and anticipation are coming to a head. It is one of those moments that will never be repeated. Good photojournalism is also about understanding and anticipating the emotions of people and, through experience, we learn to encapsulate and explore these emotions through photography.
Jenny & Scott’s event at Orocco Pier in South Queensferry was one of my favourite weddings of 2012. I’m not sure I’ve laughed quite so much at another wedding. We made a real connection and the photographs were the better for it.
